HOME PAGE & GENERAL INFORMATION

Tralee Community College (TCC)

In Kerry, Tralee Community College is the main provider of Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses, offering a wide and attractive programme. It has something to suit every one. It provides free post-leaving certificate, co-education for the region. The College is located in the Clash district of Tralee. It adjoins the Institute of Technology and is close to Tralee Sports Centre. Student accommodation in Tralee is plentiful, convenient, and of a very high standard. School transport services from outlying areas remain available to PLC students. Good canteen, sporting, computing and other facilities are available to students.
PLC courses are full time and operate for the normal college year.
The College does not charge tuition or course fees. A small charge may be levied for materials.
Enquiries are always welcome at the PLC Admissions office (066 7121741)

Choice of Course

A Post Leaving Certificate course (PLC) is a recognised preparatory route both to employment and to further education. PLC courses are suitable for students who need further education and training to enhance their chances of gaining employment. They help students to develop the skills needed for specific occupations. They also provide an alternative route to higher education in Institutes of Technology and other colleges.
Applicants should have completed the Leaving Certificate or equivalent and show a special interest in the course of study chosen.
A PLC course can be an excellent foundation year for those postponing entry to College.
It should also be considered as a serious alternative to repeating the Leaving Certificate.
Mature students who do not meet the normal academic requirements may be admitted to a course on the basis of their experience and motivation.

Programme Content

Courses specialise in specific areas of study. They offer a mixture of "hands-on" practical work, academic work and work experience. Project work is the norm. Students can do something practical, and still have the chance to get a qualification. Skills are developed and the results are often brilliant. The practical nature of a course makes it particularly attractive and enjoyable for the student.
Courses are designed as a step towards skilled employment and, as such, they are closely linked to industry and its needs.
For those who like to work with people in a caring or service profession there are specialist courses in Nursing, Special Needs, Child & Adult Care, Sport & Recreation, Tourism Studies and Security Services. These courses are an invaluable preparation as well as an essential qualification for students who plan to work in a service or caring profession.
Art courses in Tralee are among the most successful in the country. There is no better way to prepare a professional portfolio.
The range of Business courses includes Secretarial Studies for the general, medical or legal office as well as Accounting and Business Studies.
The Building Construction, Engineering, Motor and Computing courses are well established favourites.
Exciting new courses will be available this year. The Medical/Legal secretary, Security Services and Media Studies with Journalism and Radio Production will add to the Multimedia in Graphic Design choice.

FETAC Certification & Links

All courses at Tralee Community College are certified by external bodies such as FETAC and the Institute of Accounting Technicians. FETAC Awards are fully recognised both nationally and internationally.
FETAC Awards provide for progression and transfer of students to Institutes of Technology. All PLC courses at TCC are linked to specific higher education programmes at Institutes of Technology and other Colleges. The FETAC award code appropriate to each course is listed in the following pages. Details of the linked courses are available in the FETAC Links Guide. When applying for a linked course through the CAO system - the FETAC Award results may be used in place of Leaving Certificate points.

Maintenance Grants

PLC programmes are grant-aided through the National Development Plan.
A means-tested maintenance grant scheme is available for PLC students. Non EU nationals and asylum seekers are not eligible to receive maintenance support - with some exceptions.
Apply to Kerry Education Service in Maine Street Tralee, or to your local VEC office.

Non EU Nationals

Non EU Nationals (such as those with a student visa or green handbook and permission from D/JELR) will be required to pay a full economic course fee.
However persons who have been granted either Asylum, Refugee status or leave to remain on humanitarian grounds, may be exempt from this fee and entitled to free tuition. All such applicants must be in possession of the notification of their right to work. Persons including those seeking Asylum should contact the College for further clarification.
